Type of PositionPhD – Doctoral Programme
Field of ResearchMathematics / Natural Sciences
SubjectsExperimental Nanoscience
DescriptionThe scanning probe microscopy group at the Physics Department of the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg is looking for a highly-motivated Ph.D. candidate in experimental nanoscience in the field of the atomic-scale characterization and bottom-up fabrication of molecular nanomaterials with peculiar electronic properties via self-assembly and on-surface reactions. The Ph.D. project aims at understanding and controlling the electronic structure of novel low-dimensional materials fabricated from designed precursor molecules on metal and oxide surfaces. In a first step, we have to understand and to control the adsorption, self-assembly, and reaction of surface-supported molecules at the atomic-level. Therefore, we use high-resolution scanning probe techniques – including non-contact atomic force microscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy – in ultra-high vacuum at low temperatures. Using functionalized tips, we can resolve with these experimental methods individual atoms and bonds in the molecular structures to unambiguously identify their structure. In a second step, the electronic properties of the molecular structures are investigated by scanning tunneling spectroscopy and Kelvin probe force microscopy.

The project is part of the ERC Project SURFLINK and DFG Collaborative research center SFB953 – Synthetic carbon allotropes – (https://chemistry.nat.fau.eu/research/dfg/sfb953/) that provides close collaboration with research groups from experimental physics, theory, and synthetic chemistry. The molecular architectures are fabricated from specially designed molecular building blocks with tailored functionalities provided by collaborators. We offer outstanding infrastructure and broad interdisciplinary surroundings.

The position is available immediately for 3 years. The salary will be according to the German TV-L. Applications must include a motivation letter, CV including an academic transcript with the obtained marks and contact information of 2 references. Please submit your application by e-mail to Prof. Dr. Sabine Maier: sabine.maier@fau.de. The review of applications will begin immediately.
