Start: as soon as possible
Place of work: Geesthacht near Hamburg
Application deadline: April 19, 2023
For our Institute for Material and Process Design, we are looking for a doctoral student (m/f/d) for the Material Design department with the express goal of a doctorate as soon as possible. The position is initially limited to 3 years.

Equal opportunities are an important part of our personnel policy. We would therefore like to expressly encourage qualified women to apply.

The research focus of the Institute for Material and Process Design is the sustainable and ecological development of innovative materials and manufacturing processes, especially for the transport sector and medical technology. The manufacturing processes are designed to be climate and resource-friendly along the entire value chain. Numerical methods and methods of artificial intelligence are increasingly being used for optimized and resource-saving material and process development, with the aim of developing digital twins to accelerate material development.

Your tasks

  • Your task is to develop a forecast model for alloy and process-related microstructural and mechanical properties of semi-finished products made of light metals. For this purpose, a material and process development strategy from data-based analyzes using artificial intelligence (AI) is proposed, which identifies, processes and quantifies the influence of digitally available attributes from the parameter and characterization world. With the combination of AI and material-based understanding and their interaction, an accelerated and optimized material and process design is sought. The work is supervised in close cooperation with the Institute for Material Systems Modeling.
  • Data genesis through own experimental results and literature data of alloy-process-microstructure-property-correlation for extruded and rolled light metal alloys
  • Research and construction of a suitable machine learning model (model fitting, based on available machine learning tools with different regression concepts, SVM and/or neural network)
  • Validation of quantitative analyzes of the predictors, e.g. B. about feature selection, adaptation of the neuron structure and “minimized loss” in model training, including the weighting of individual predictors (attributes) in interaction with the material properties. You publish your scientific results in peer-reviewed journals and at international conferences.

your profile

  • You have successfully completed a university degree (diploma or master’s degree) in the field of materials science, materials science, engineering (mechanical engineering / electrical engineering), physics, computational engineering or a comparable course.
  • You are interested in characterizing light metals with regard to microstructure development and in determining their mechanical properties.
  • Ideally, you have initial experience in the field of material simulations and can carry out digitally supported analyzes of the microstructure and property relationships.
  • You have an independent, goal-oriented and structured way of working and a high degree of teamwork and are fluent in spoken and written German and English.
  • You enjoy working in an international team.

We offer you

  • an exciting and varied task in a research center with more than 1,100 employees from around 50 nations
  • a well-connected research campus in the countryside and the best opportunities for networking and sporting activities
  • Individual opportunities for personal and professional development
  • Social benefits according to the collective agreement of the public service and remuneration
  • an excellent technical infrastructure and modern workplace equipment
  • 6 weeks holiday per year plus company holidays between Christmas and New Year
  • very good compatibility of private and professional life through offers of mobile and flexible work
  • PhD Buddy Program
  • family-friendly corporate policy with childcare options, e.g. B. near-company day-care center
  • Free Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
  • corporate benefits
  • a varied range of canteens on campus
Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon
The Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon conducts cutting-edge international research for a changing world: around 1,100 employees make their contribution to overcoming climate change, the sustainable use of the world’s coastal systems and the resource-friendly increase in the quality of life. From basic understanding to practical application, the interdisciplinary research spectrum covers a unique spectrum.

Institute for Material and Process Design
The Institute for Material and Process Design is dedicated to the sustainable and ecological development of innovative materials and manufacturing processes, especially for the transport sector and medical technology. For this purpose, materials are tailored and manufacturing processes are designed to be resource-saving – from modeling the material behavior and developing the material to the finished component.

Have we piqued your interest?
We look forward to receiving your meaningful application documents (cover letter, CV, references, certificates, etc.) stating reference number 2023/WD 2 by April 19, 2023.
