Description | Advertising division: IEK-9 – Fundamental Electrochemistry Reference number: D155/2018, Chemistry, physics, materials science PhD position: Developement of cathodes for the electrochemical conversion of CO2 We are looking for PhD candidates for the department of functional materials with a master degree in chemistry, physics and materials science. Description: The work will be carried out in scientific research grants on the topic of energy research. As for the increasing energy demand the conversion of carbon dioxide to basic chemicals for the chemical industry and the mobility sector in an alternative to direct electrification. But the energy efficient and selective conversion of carbon dioxide is lacking of scalable catalytic processes and catalysts. Your aim will be to tackle ta catalytic conversion process and to via gaining fundamental knowledge on this process to tune its selectivity with optimizing the process parameters or the catalysts itself. Therefore you will perform electrochemical reactions, analyze the products and prepare catalysts yourself. As a basic you will use carbon fibre materials and prepare catalytic layers on top of these materials. For the work you will need to collaborate with colleagues of the other departments of IEK-9 which use, solid state NMR and AFM for characterization or perform high temperature carbon dioxide co-electrolysis. About the research background: Your work place will be research center Jülich, which is located between cologne and Aachen. In an nternational team with excellent infrastructure in one of the biggest research centers of europe. The IEK-9 is part of the HITEC graduate program of the Helmholtz-Society, which offers on top of networking with other PhDs the development of additional softskills. The position is restricted to a period of three years with the aim of finishing your PhD. The salary is E-13 (50%) TVöD. Forschungszentrum Jülich aims to employ more women in this area and therefore particularly welcomes applications from women. We also welcome applications from disabled persons.
