RWTH Aachen University is divided into nine faculties offering 133 degree programs. It specialises in engineering, and 40 per cent of its students are registered in this field. A further 25 per cent study natural science, mathematics and information technology.

  • The research strength of RWTH Aachen University is confirmed by figures from the Federal Statistical Office. With more than € 130 mill. it acquired more third-party funding in 2005 than any other university in Germany. According to the CHE Ranking, its research reputation is particularly high in the degree programmes architecture, civil engineering,mechanical engineering and electrical engineering and information technology.
  • In the German Excellence Initiative, RWTH Aachen University was successful with its institutional strategy and was awarded the status of “excellent university”. In addition, its graduate school, the clusters of excellence and “Integrative Production Technology for High-wage countries” were funded at RWTH Aachen University.
  • In the CHE Ranking, the degree course in chemistry received particularly high grades from the students. Studying conditions and supervision were rated as excellent.

TU Berlin has seven faculties offering some 60 degree programs . The main focus of research and teaching is on science and technology. About 43 per cent of the students are registered in engineering and 11 per cent in natural science programs.

  • TU Berlin’s research strength can be particularly demonstrated by its success in the German Excellence Initiative, which provided funding for the graduate school “Berlin Mathematical School” and the cluster of excellence “Unifying Concepts in Catalysis”.
  • The “German Telekom Laboratories” On the TU Berlin campus are a shining example of the successful cooperation between science and enterprise.
  • In the CHE Ranking, the degree course in civil engineering received particularly high grades from the students. Supervision by the teaching staff, practical orientation and laboratory equipment were rated as excellent.

TU Braunschweig is organised into six faculties offering more than 50 degree programs from architecture to physics. With about 48 per cent, almost half of the 12,000 students are registered in engineering programmes.

  • The DFG funding ranking confirms the research strength of TU Braunschweig: first place for construction engineering and architecture.
  • Anyone interested in studying aerospace technology is at the right address at TU Braunschweig, as here they will find the only research airport in Germany.
  • In the CHE Ranking, students rated studying conditions as especially excellent in the fields of civil engineering and electrical engineering and information technology.

There are 13 faculties at TU Darmstadt, offering in total more than 90 degree programs. More than half of the Darmstadt students, i.e. 57 per cent, are registered in engineering programs. A further 22 per cent study natural sciences.

  • Its success in the German Excellence Initiative testifies to the research strength of TU Darmstadt. The German Research Council and the Science Council approved the funding of the graduate school “Graduate School of Computational Engineering” and the cluster of excellence “Smart Interfaces”.
  • In the Humboldt-Ranking,which counts the stays of international scholarship holders and prize winners at German universities, TU Darmstadt is in first place for engineering. This indicates how highly attractive it is to international scientists. Aber But the proportion of international students, at 22 per cent, is also significantly higher than the national average of some 13 per cent.
  • In the CHE Ranking, the degree course in mechanical engineering received particularly high grades. Apart from the excellent research reputation, especially the supervision by the teaching staff and the practical orientation were rated as excellent by the students.

TU Dresden is divided into 14 faculties, offering a total of more than 90 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. 45 per cent of the 35,000 students are registered in engineering programs.

  • TU Dresden represents top level research in the new German federal states. Under the German Excellence Initiative, the graduate school“Dresden International Graduate School for Biomedicine and Bioengineering” and the cluster of excellence “From Cells to Tissues to Therapies” are being funded at the TU Dresden.
  • According to the Federal Statistical Office, TU Dresden received more than € 83 million in third-party funding in 2005, and thus took fourth place in the nationwide ranking of all universities. Particularly in electrical engineering, information technology, systems technology, and construction engineering and architecture, TU Dresden is in the top group, as can be seen in the funding ranking of the German Research Council.
  • The students gave top marks to the degree program in biology. According to the CHE ranking, supervision by the teaching staff, organisation of studies and the practical orientation were rated as excellent.

Leibniz Universität Hannover is divided into nine faculties, offering a total of 75 subjects in 160 full-time and part-time degree programs.

  • The research strength of Leibniz Universität Hannover is revealed in particular in its success in the German Excellence Initiative, with the funding of its cluster of excellence “Centre for Quantum Engineering and Space-Time Research”.
  • In the CHE Ranking, the degree course in architecture received particularly high grades from the students. Organisation of studies, supervision, equipment of the workplaces and studying conditions were rated as excellent.

At Karlsruhe Institute of Technology there are eleven faculties offering more than 80 degree programs. Just under 40 per cent of the students are registered in engineering and 34 per cent in natural science programs.

  • In 2006 Universität Karlsruhe was successful in the German Excellence Initiative with its institutional strategy of the “Karlsruher Instituts für Technologie” (KIT) and was awarded the status of “excellent university”. In addition, its graduate school “Karlsruhe School of Optics & Photonics” and the clusters of excellence “Center for Functional Nanostructures” received funding under the terms of the competition.
  • In the funding ranking of the German Research Council (2006) Universität Karlsruhe (TH) is in the top group: first place for electrical engineering, information technology and systems engineering, and second place for construction engineering and architecture.
  • In teaching, Universität Karlsruhe (TH) also received excellent evaluations for both fields. In the CHE ranking it is the only university to be placed in the top group for all sections investigated in both civil engineering and electrical engineering and information technology.

  • In 2006 TU München was successful in the German Excellence Initiative with its institutional strategy of “the Entrepreneurial University” and was awarded the status of “excellent university”. In addition, its graduate school “International Graduate School of Science and Engineering” sowie die Exzellenzclusterand the clusters of excellence “Fundamental Physics – Origin and Structure of the Universe” and “Cognition for Technical Systems” received funding under the terms of the competition.
  • According to the Federal Statistical Office, TU München received more than € 104 million in third-party funding in 2005, and thus took third place in the nationwide ranking.
  • The CHE ranking (2007) singles out the high research reputation for the degree programs in information technology, mechanical engineering andchemistry. The students commended in particular the studying situation in mathematics.

  • According to a study by the Federal Statistical Office, Universität Stuttgart acquires an average of € 441,580 in third-party funding per professor, and thus lies in first place in the nationwide ranking of all universities.
  • Its success in the German Excellence Initiative testifies to the research strength of Universität Stuttgart. In addition, its graduate school“Advanced Manufacturing Engineering” and the cluster of excellence “Simulation Technology” received funding under the terms of the competition.
  • Universität Stuttgart is highly attractive to international scientists, as can be seen in the Humboldt ranking from 2005, which counts the stays of international scholarship holders and prize winners at German universities. Universität Stuttgart is in second place for engineering.
