PhD candidate student in Immunology & Hemostaseology (m/f)
The University Medical Center Mainz in the laboratory of PD Dr. Markus Bosmann is seeking a highly qualified:
PhD candidate student in Immunology & Hemostaseology (m/f)
The University Medical Center Mainz of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz is ranked as a leading research institution of Germany having a strong immunology program. Our laboratory is affiliated to the Center for Thrombosis and Hemostasis (CTH). Objectives of the PhD candidate program are to create an attractive environment for basic & clinical research, improved career opportunities for young researchers and high-quality in patient-oriented research.
We are looking for a highly motivated individual to promote our experimental studies on the molecular interactions of inflammation and coagulation. The projects are dedicated to elucidate the pathophysiology of innate and adaptive immunity in the context of sepsis and acute lung injury. Special areas of interest are the role of host-pathogen interactions, novel pathogen-associated molecular patterns, macrophages, neutrophils, platelets, cytokines (e.g. IL-27), complement anaphylatoxins and tissue factor / protease activated receptors. The projects will be tailored to meet the individual qualifications and interests of the PhD applicant. For example, the nature and extent of molecular biology techniques, immunology methods or a focus on surgical mouse models can be discussed with the PhD applicant.
These basic and translational research projects will provide opportunities to learn state-of-the-art techniques in immunology, molecular biology and hemostaseology. Complex mouse breeding strategies (cre-lox system) and generation of bone-marrow chimeric mice will be performed. Surgical mouse models of experimental sepsis (cecal ligation & puncture) / acute lung injury (e.g. intra-tracheal injections) will be employed. In addition, cell culture techniques (isolation of macrophages, neutrophils, platelets) as well as flow cytometry, RT-PCR, ChIP assays, ELISA, Western blotting, bead-based assays, platelet aggregometry, transfections / lentiviral transductions, histology, immunostainings, intra-vital microscopy, massive parallel sequencing (NGS) technologies and CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing may be performed.
The PhD student will have opportunities in designing as well as conducting independent projects. Publication of the research results in international journals is strongly expected. Based on individual credentials and experience, a future application for the Doctoral Candidate Fellowship Program of the CTH and/or the Mainz Research School of Translational Biomedicine (TransMed) can be discussed.
An M.Sc. or diploma degree in a relevant field is required and a strong background in Immunology, Molecular Biology and/or Hemostaseology is preferred. Ability in initiating, conducting, evaluating and reporting of research studies is essential. Experiences with tissue cultures, transgenic mouse models and molecular biology methodologies are desirable. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.
The PhD student will have the opportunity to work with an interdisciplinary and highly motivated team of scientists and clinicians. Further information is available:
