Beginning The starting date within the programme is flexible. For the spring selection, the latest starting date is 1 October in the year of admission. For the autumn selection, the latest starting date is 1 March of the year following the year of admission.
Programme duration The typical duration of a PhD thesis is three to four years.
Application deadline Applications are accepted twice a year. In general, the deadline for the spring selection is in December, and the deadline for the autumn selection is in July. The actual deadlines are published on the internet page.
Course content The Dresden International Graduate School for Biomedicine and Bioengineering (DIGS-BB), in cooperation with the International Max Planck Research School for Cell, Developmental and Systems Biology (IMPRS-CellDevoSys), provides interdisciplinary training and research opportunities for outstanding university graduates who wish to work towards a PhD in the fields of Cell, Developmental and Systems Biology, Regenerative Medicine or Molecular Bioengineering and Biophysics.Structured graduate training is offered in three interconnected programmes, namely, the programmes for Cell, Developmental and Systems Biology (CellDevoSys programme), for Regenerative Medicine (RegMed programme), and for Molecular Bioengineering and Biophysics (BioEng programme). For PhD students enrolled in a particular programme, in-depth expert training is offered in the programme-specific research areas, supplemented by training modules of the two other programmes. The curricula are composed of mandatory and elective modules. In addition to the programme-specific training, all students participate in central training modules including seminars, symposia, soft skills and language courses. Great emphasis is placed on expert thesis supervision; each PhD student is guided by a Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC) throughout the thesis work.


Educational organisation For PhD students in the first year of thesis work, the CellDevoSys programme, the RegMed programme and the BioEng programme each offer a five-week, full-time course, including lectures, practical work, and tutorials. A variety of advanced courses and workshops (two to three days) are offered for PhD students in the second and third years. Throughout the thesis work, PhD students participate in journal clubs, research seminars, internal seminars and group meetings.
Forms of assessment The progress of the thesis is monitored and evaluated annually by the Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC) on the basis of a written report and an oral presentation.
The prerequisites for the doctoral degree include examination of theoretical knowledge in an oral examination (Rigorosum). Further requirements include the experts’ evaluation of the written PhD thesis (dissertation) and the public defence (disputation).

Course objectives The DIGS-BB and the IMPRS-CellDevoSys provide training and research opportunities for work towards a doctoral degree. Great emphasis is placed on promoting the ability to independently address research questions in an interdisciplinary context.

Enrolment fees The enrolment fee is currently 219.30 EUR per semester and includes a “Semesterticket” which entitles students to use the public transport system in Dresden and regional trains throughout the federal state of Saxony.
Costs of living Costs of living may vary according to personal needs and preferences. However, 700 EUR per month represents an average budget for a student in Dresden, including expenses for student accommodation and insurance.
Funding opportunities within the university PhD students will receive financial support for the duration of the thesis. Financial support is granted via fellowships or working contracts. Fellowships are 1,365 EUR plus 103 EUR subsidy and child allowance (if eligible) per month.


Language requirements The language of the PhD programme is English. Proficiency in English is therefore required, and applicants may be contacted by phone for assessment.

Academic requirements Applicants who hold an undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline (life and natural sciences, computer science, medicine or engineering) which allows them to enter doctoral programmes in their home country are eligible for admission. In general, an MSc degree or equivalent is required. However, students holding an excellent BSc degree can be admitted on a case-by-case basis.

Arrival support Rooms in guest houses are available for newly-arrived PhD students upon request for up to one month. During their first weeks in Dresden, the PhD Programme Office will assist students with all formalities related to moving, such as visa and registration procedures, accommodation, insurance, and other obligatory formalities.
Services and support for international students The PhD Programme Office provides individual and expert support for PhD students admitted to the programme. Most of the formalities will be dealt with individually after arrival in Dresden, including visa issues, flat hunting, setting up a bank account, and arrangements for health insurance and other insurance. Assistance is provided with all formalities related to the doctorate, such as matriculation at TU Dresden and doctoral proceedings.The International Office of TU Dresden offers a broad programme of social activities each semester, including guided tours around the city of Dresden, trips in the region and to cities of interest in Germany or in neighbouring countries. Furthermore, the Erasmus Initiative TU Dresden regularly organises events at which international students can meet other international and German students. Taking part in these gatherings is an easy way to make friends and to feel at home in Dresden.
Accommodation A wide variety of rooms and flats are available in Dresden. Students may choose between living in a student hall of residence (monthly rent from 150 EUR to 275 EUR), a shared flat (monthly rent from 140 EUR to 300 EUR), or a private apartment/small flat (monthly rent from 300 EUR to 500 EUR).
